Wheat ranks third in both area and production after rice and maize. It contributes about 21% to the cereal area and 19% to the cereal production of the country. Wheat is grown on approximately 700,000 ha and has become a vital component both in farms and kitchens of Nepalese farmers. Wheat production of Nepal increased from 265 thousand tonnes in 1970 to 1,940 thousand tonnes in 2019 growing at an average annual rate of 4.91%.
